Rental Policies

  • Reservations are placed on the church calendar immediately via phone call or email, and secured by receiving a signed contract either by email or mail, with required deposit

  • Full rental payment is required a minimum of two weeks before the event

  • A damage deposit is required for parties, to be forfeited in part or in total should the facilities be damaged or require unexpected clean-up

  • Non-Unitarian-Universalist-affiliated programs which, in the judgment of the minister, may be perceived to have religious content, may rent BUC facilities but require the minister's permission

  • Program descriptions and printed publicity for the event must be submitted through Rental Coordinator and approved before distribution. Failure to comply may result in revocation of the rental contract. All program descriptions and promotion must include the statement, as worded, that “This program is not sponsored by and may not reflect the views of the Birmingham Unitarian Church.”

  • Renters may purchase an ad in BUC's monthly newsletter at the rate of $50 per ad (250 words + graphic). Newsletter ad submissions are due by the 20th of the month prior to your event. To arrange for a newsletter ad, send an email to Communications Coordinator Sara Constantakis. All other BUC communication platforms are limited to internal BUC events.

Renter's Resposibilities

All aspects of the agreement, including damage costs, are the responsibility of the contract signer. The church rents to personally-responsible individuals, not to vaguely-defined organizations or groups. The contract signer is responsible for enforcing the following rules:

  • Facilities must be left clean

  • In the sanctuary, no food or beverages are allowed

  • No open flames or burning of any substance without permission of the church

  • When leaving, all lights must be turned off, heat or air-conditioning adjusted per Rental Coordinator’s direction, and windows and doors locked

  • When kitchen is rented: stoves, sink, refrigerator, microwave, and dishwasher may be used; renters must supply their own consumables, tablecloths, table settings, and decorations

  • Damage to walls, floors, equipment, and/or furnishings of the room(s) reserved during the contracted rental period will be deducted from the deposit or billed to the contract signer

  • Rooms not reserved and paid for are absolutely off-limits

  • BUC is a non-smoking campus, including the parking lot, walkways, and grounds

  • Decorations or displays and alterations of existing room arrangements require prior approval by the Rental Coordinator

  • Wine and beer may be served if no fee or charge of any type is paid by persons attending. Further, the renter must comply with all tenets of the law regarding alcoholic beverages.
